NOT A DREAM III

“Can I have this dance with you?” He drawled with a glint in his eyes and a charming smile on his lips.   Na fake oyibo movie be this?   I asked myself and turned to look at the giggling lady beside me. Tina jabbed my ribs with her elbow, I flinched and turned back to the man with the fake accent. His sagged baggy jeans and braided hair turned me off instantly. Trying to hide my disgust, I smiled politely at him;   “Sorry, my shoes are too tight.” He frowned and without another word, turned and headed for the far end of the garden. That was a lie. My shoes were perfect but dancing was the last thing on my mind. It was a Friday night and I was at an old friend’s birthday party with Tina, my colleague. Judging by the crowd, the enthralling mansion and fleet of deluxe cars in his garage, he was unarguably very popular and rich. According to Tina, it was all c ourtesy of his wealthy and generous father-in-law. Lucky man, I confessed. The only reason I had agreed

The Crevice

“I will kill him. I will kill them all!” Paul yelled as he barged into my office . I looked up from my thick case file and saw him by the door. He looked unkempt and the strong stench of hard liquor suddenly filled the office. His eyes were red and distant. His hands were clenched into fists and his normally pleasant demeanor was contorted in an all consuming fury. “Paul! Are you okay? What happened?” I queried softly, fearing for the worst. He opened his mouth to explain but words failed him. Gasping, his knees bolted and he crumpled to the floor.   I sprang up and rushed over to his side. Paul was visibly shaken. I closed the office door in the face of our secretary and the junior lawyers and tried to help him up. Paul was the last person to get upset over anything. So who could have upset him on a Tuesday morning? “What happened? Please talk to me.” He turned puffy eyes on me;  “My brother- in-law...my wife...I...” he stuttered and broke down co

Busy Busy

Her heart beat accelerated. She could feel blood rushing through her veins. Calm down! She cautioned herself. Taking steadying breathes Sarah tried to focus on her clients and not the anger rising within her. “My son is innocent. They just want to victimize him because my husband is dead.”   The woman said on a sob and dabbed at her swollen eyes with a damp handkerchief. Indeed ! Sarah thought and shifted her gaze to the cute boy seated next to the whimpering lady. He should be in his early twenties she guessed while taking in his popped collar and fake “bling-blings.” Guilty as Charged was written all over him. He was definitely guilty she concluded. In fact, she could bet her wig and gown on it. Suddenly running out of patience with the sobbing woman, Sarah sat back and cleared her throat noisily...

NOT A DREAM

I applied the pink gloss on my lips and smiled at myself in the hand mirror. It made my lips fuller and I liked the shade. “I will take it.” I said and smiled at the sales girl.  “Nikky!” I turned swiftly and beheld a very fair and heavy woman. My eyes went to her glittering neck. "that necklace must have cost a fortune" I thought while trying to recall where I had met her. She was totally unfamiliar. Hastily moving over, she imprisoned my body in a tight embrace. The woman nearly strangled me but I eventually managed to free myself from her bear hug. Straightening out my creased top, I noticed that the strange woman was still very excited at seeing me, so I decided to play along. After all, she go soon move on;  I thought, but she persisted in her admiration of my figure and kept on bombarding me with questions. That was when I owned up. “It’s me! Bola! Your camp bunky!”

INSPIRATIONAL WEDNESDAY (VICTOR CHUKWUEKE)

Image
Victor Chukwueke's story won today's vote as the most inspirational. I was deeply inspired. According to this article by the US COMMITTEE FOR REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS, he overcame obstacles and achieved his life long dreams. Read below The last time the mother and son saw each other was when Victor, now 25, left Nigeria to live in the United States at the age of 15.  Fast-forward a decade, and Victor is not only graduating with honors from Wayne State University, he is also a commencement speaker.  His mother, Mary, arrived in Detroit to witness this major milestone in her son’s life.  BATTLING A GENETIC DISORDER Just ten years ago, neither Victor nor his mother would have thought such an achievement possible.  As a child, growing up in an impoverished family in a rural village in Nigeria, Victor developed large tumors on the top of his head and side of his face.  His mother took him from hospital to hospital to seek treatment for his condition, an extreme

Suicide Bombing In Maiduguri (MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE)

Image
Add caption A Suicide bomber killed at least 17 people in Maiduguri today at the popular GSM market near the post office at about 2pm shortly after the Zuhur prayers . I was deeply saddened by this news and I join with peace loving Nigerians in offering my heart felt sympathy to families who lost loved ones. No words can reduce the pain you are feeling right now, but just know that they have gone to a better place. Nigerians share in your loss. MAY THEIR SOULS REST IN PERFECT PEACE, AMEN.

SUNRISE (Excerpt)

Image
A short excerpt from my novel Sunrise...   SIERRA LEONE, FREETOWN. “Ambassador!”                          Anthony stopped and turned towards the unfamiliar, tall and dark man. He frowned slightly as the man raised a glass of creamy liquid towards him. How did he recognize me? Anthony thought aghast at the fact that his cover had been blown. His eyes flicked over the huge thugs beside and around the tall and dark fellow and his frown deepened.   He had no idea who the man was. Waving briefly he turned and headed for the course. His caddy, a young boy of twelve who was apparently too tall for his age, tagged along behind him almost dragging his stand bag.   Golf was a vital part of him now. Whenever he moved into a new town, aside from verifying his reservation at the hotel, he always made it a point of duty to check out the best golf club in the town. The famous Lumley Beach was right across the course and was one of the sights he found appealing in Freetown. Th

HOUSE OF GOD

Something has been bothering me. It has been on my mind for too long and it’s all because I have noticed that people have ceased to set their priorities right.  Sometime last year, I decided to take a walk in a park near my home. Over the years, I have seen people jogging, taking walks and even walking their dogs in that park but for reasons best known to me, I had managed to keep my distance. Well, that day, I decided to break my rules and take a walk in the park. After walking around for a while, I found a nice spot with a good view under a tree to rest my long legs. The park was not crowded on that day and so suited my mood. I was appreciating nature and the gentle breeze caressing my skin when three young ladies claimed the spot next to me. I looked over at them and fell in love with their flattering knee- length garden dresses and gorgeous accessories. They looked so alive. They smiled at me; I waved at them and continued with my admiration of nature and the little ki

My Take on Beauty

Image
How do you define beauty? Is it that exquisite mansion, that delicious cuisine; that dolled up, curvaceous, sexy and mysterious lady or that tall man with muscular abs and great biceps? Is your definition of beauty influenced by fashion magazines, your environment, the media, your personal standards, your culture, your friends or your mum? The fact that “gorgeous” people get preferential treatment while the “not so beautiful” people are viewed as unintelligent and imperfect is a sad fact of life. That notwithstanding, I must say that the definition of beauty is subjective. A friend of mine once introduced me to a lady he described as the most beautiful woman he ever dated.

EVA II

THIS IS EVA'S SIDE OF THE STORY... Pushing the heavy volume to one side of my table, I rubbed my eyes and yawned. My stomach growled angrily from neglect. I had a lot on my plate and food was not even on the menu.  My work load had doubled with Eva's exit. Eva! I thought and smiled. She was an Angel, a confidant, a hard worker and a reliable friend. She knew how to get me out of my chair and into the canteen for my break. I just missed her and even my principal was having a tough time finding a replacement. She was more than a colleague. People like Eva and Ted were rare gems. People of strong character and discipline. Hard times could not break them. It only made them stronger. Their love for each other reminded me of   1st Corinthian chapter 13, Verse 4 to... you know that chapter that defines Love? Yes that chapter. This is not a bible class so check it out if you want to. Anyway, I'm sure you are tired of my rambling and want to know why Ted was cryin
