Life After Death

Image
Growing up, I heard stories about haunted houses, the living-dead, spirits and tales of people who embraced the welcoming arms of death screaming, yelling or fighting for an extension of their earthly timeline. As a Christian I grew up learning and believing in what the bible teaches about death, resurrection, purgatory and so on.  As an inquisitive teen and young lady, I read books and stories on time travel, souls departing the physical realm and saw movies like The Omen, I know what you did last summer, Hammer house of horror, Back from hell (I never had the heart to finish that one), our own Willy Willy and Nneka the pretty serpent which by the way always got me screaming my lungs out and yeah, there was Mel Gibson's passion of Christ which was a detailed (in my opinion ) portrayal of the agonizing death of Christ. That movie  had me crying for days.  Between the movies and the books, I would say the movies were more impactful because they vividly portrayed in pictures and vide

Woes of a Coffee Drinker

Image
If you're a Nigerian, then you would agree that most of us, if not all, love our tea or cocoa (Milo, Bournvita and so on) with cream especially on a cold morning or just for "washing down" our breakfast or even dinner. Chai, you need to see the queue at Mai Shayi's (tea seller) shop down my street every morning. Yeah, for most of us, it's tea or a big bottle of chilled Coca cola. Somehow in the course of my adulthood, I was introduced to decaffeinated coffee and I fell in love with it too. I became hooked and started having an open mind whenever it had to do with beverages. Well that was until my coffee woes.

German Christmas Market Experience

Image
Did you know that every Christmas season, the streets of Germany come alive with open-air markets known as Christkindlmarkt (the little city of wood and cloth)? These historical markets usually adorn the beautiful market squares of cities only during the Advent Season and end on the Christmas eve in most cities. Although this tradition dates back to the middle ages, today they still resonate the  past.

Nikky's Diary - 17 Again?

Image
Getting to where I am today took a lot of will power. Better still, I should say that the turn my life took is a surprise I am still trying to get used to. Some people might say; is it not Nikky? I know her story nah. My response will always be a Laugh out Loud (LOL). Nwanne you don't know nothing.

Nollywood and The New Thrill

Image
Today, I saw another gory news of a young girl dismembered by her teenage boyfriend and I asked myself; what is going on? How did we get to this stage? Our teenagers are now engaging in this false belief called "money making rituals"!!!  I am vexed and won't dwell on this issue. I won't go for the usual target; our near comatose government nor would I point accusing fingers at our failing family system. My focus will be on our dear Nollywood as a public educator. Research has shown that Television, and other media devices, influence children and in extension, the society. Children who constantly view violent programs, movies or clips have a tendency to become more insensitive, violent, aggressive and most times, depressed.

THE REJECTED STONE (True Story)

Image
After 3 years of a tumultuous relationship, he turned his back on her for another who was younger, was willing to share his bed before the vows, had a nice job and  better prospects. He broke her heart without a backwards glance. No explanations. No remorse. No second thoughts. Not even thoughts of the few good times they shared. Thought of how she had on several occasions begged from family to support him when he was down and penniless and she was jobless. He told his friends about her. She heard the tales of how they laughed at her for keeping her virtue all those years and chided him for accepting such. His family said; at her age she might not be able to give you children. You can't marry your mate. Never.

Hot Cake... Ep. 3

Image
The candle light dinner was magical and the food was exquisite. A lthough I have never been a fan of continental cuisine, I've always loved our local delicacies , that night my tastebuds pleasurably adapted to the strange dishes let me just hope that my stomach will respect herself.  Elvis lacked culinary skills, he can't be good at everything nah. But he made up for it by inviting a chef from one of the best hotel’s in town to prepare and serve us dinner at his luxurious home; an apartment at the new world trade center building.  The apartment was tasteful and the well crafted interior reeked of sophistication, luxury, masculinity and passion. Omo the blend pressed all my buttons and I relaxed,  who no like enjoyment? The night was  perfect and so was Elvis. His exceptional decorum, brilliant conversations and impressive sense of humor raked in more points for him.

Hot Cake Ep. 2

Image
Previously  (click to catch up) Hot cake wanted a date with me? Wonders will never cease oh! "Friday evening then?" His voice echoed. My active brain hastily flipped through my schedule; the human brain is indeed wonderful. "Perfect!"  Stop smiling too much; I cautioned myself as I watched him fidgeting with his keys. "Great! Thank you for saying yes. My driver will come for you by 6pm. I don't want you stressing yourself..." He doesn't want me to stress myself? Chai! The guy just scored a thousand points with those words

Hot Cake

Model: Alfred Best Muna  When I ran into him, I was excited. Besides it's not everyday one runs into someone from the past. I was actually on my way to an office when we ran into each other inside the elevator. He had screamed out my name. It took awhile but the face eventually registered. PAULO!!! (Not his real name). He was a hot cake back when I had low cut hair and tiny legs...lol! There was this story about some girls fighting over him while some who could not win his heart dreamed of him. Paulo was a lady's man. He knew it back then and enjoyed the attention. Almost every girl in our neighborhood wanted Paulo as her boyfriend. Well, everyone except me of course; I was in love with my books and Jesus (stop murmuring joor 😂). Moving on.

Scream the pain out

Image
"I'm no screamer." That was me until I felt that severe pain. Tears were suddenly not enough. I screamed my heart out!! Are you going through any form of pain, anxiety, frustration or stress today? Are you an ardent believer of the traditional cliches; "real men don't cry" or "a strong woman does not reveal her pains/real emotions?" It's time to drop those views before you kill yourself. You are allowed to scream. You are allowed to cry.

God Was There - Testimony

Image
I woke up today . It's a Sunday!! I closed my eyes. Thank you God for this beautiful day. I hurriedly got ready, went  to church to praise my King and worship with my brethren. Service was normal. No drama. I left for my home. I was very close to my home when I noticed it. The vehicle; driver something is wrong. Before I could say another word,  we crashed. I never saw it coming. As I scrambled out, I lost control. I staggered and went down on my knees on the freshly mowed lawn by the roadside. Same lawn I passed everyday on my way out. I was dazed. The driver was dazed. People rushed over to us. Was it the tyre? Nobody could explain what happened.

SAY NO TO SUICIDE

Image
Your future is bright. Your future is beautiful. You might not see it now You might have genuine reasons to doubt But hey, never give up on yourself Because I will never give up on you We will walk through it all together and, We will overcome... Suicide is not the way out.

That Bank and I

Image
Phone ringing Customer care: Good morning madam Bola: How may I help you? Customer Care: We have noticed that you have an old inactive account with our bank what would you like to do with it? Bola: I have a new active account with your bank and I mandated my branch to close the old one. Customer care: Okay ma. Kindly visit our nearest branch and mandate them to close the inactive account. Next day, she went to the nearest branch. A mean faced young man collected her details and all the requirements. He said; Account closed. Have a nice day. 3 years later. Phone rings

Fleeing From Independence...

Image
On the eve of October 1 1960, Nigerians were eager to usher in our Independence and take the mantle of leadership from our masters. The streets were alive with joy and hearts were filled with expectations. We had reasons to celebrate and the country was agog with the fanfare "Are you ready?" His voice drowned out the volume of the radio documentary. I turned to see my husband wrestling with the lid of a bloated traveling box.  I frowned down at him and the pile of neatly arranged luggages and used cartons filled with household equipments. We had packed all night. Almost everything we owned was tied up and placed next to our bedroom door. Well, everything but our son who was asleep in his room. "Honey, must we go?" My voice could not conceal my exhaustion. He paused, slowly  pulled away from the closed box,  stood up and turned towards me. His eyes mirrored his surprise and displeasure at my question;
