THE INTERNET AND ME...
MY INSPIRATION FOR THIS ARTICLE? THE RECENT PURCHASE OF WHATSAPP BY FACEBOOK
Before the advent of mobile phones, digital
cameras and internet data plans, most Nigerians were very reluctant to release their
personal details, information or pictures to anybody not closely related to them. In fact, I can still recall that giving
a stranger your personal details was almost a taboo, forgetting
your picture with a displeased lover was a bad omen and the reason
behind strings of ill luck. Ladies only sent their pictures to prospective
husbands and in the event of the relationship failing irredeemably, the couple
ensured that they recovered their pictures and personal items from each other. Those
days are however, gone and I do not know whether to say sadly or gladly.
With the advent of the internet
and the mobile phones, Nigerians
broke out from the shackles of being very security conscious or overly
secretive and embraced the world of the World Wide Web. We delved into the social media
applications such as Hi5, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, BlackBerry
messenger, Viber, To-go and a whole lot of other applications. Life became good, easy and flexible. We had the world in our hands and like a new wine;
we wasted no time in savouring the taste.
We became eager to show off our successes, meet new people, reunite with old friends, update our status regularly and divulge our personal details, post pictures of all our family members even our new born babies, tag our friends, check for and receive updates. Our dreams came true! Our black and white lives became colorful, rainbows!

Our dreams came true! Our black and white lives became colorful, rainbows!
For most of us, our lives now
revolve around the internet. We can no longer live without E business, E
banking, E marriage, E dating, E books and every other E activity. We have all the latest electronic
devices, we join all the sites so as to grow our network and receive mails of
their various updates. We take pictures at every given opportunity even
at night in the dark and gladly share them on line! Mscheew!
I am sure you are wondering:
where is Nikky going with these thoughts? She has a Facebook page and even a Blog, so what is
her problem? It is not bad to be trendy, besides everybody is doing it. In
truth, you are right.
Why should we have a problem
with putting up our personal details for the whole world to view and use
without our permission?
Why should we be worried about our privacy,
after all we accepted a long memo on privacy, which we never bothered to read, before
joining that site?
Why should we have a problem
with the free passage of our email addresses, home addresses, recent jobs, geographic region and phone contacts to
numerous application developers and websites for free without a guarantee that
our privacy would be protected?
Why should we have a problem with the various
fraudulent and personalized emails gaining their way into our email spam or
inbox when we know we
never at any time joined that crazy web site?
Why should we have a problem
with the recurrent calls from fraudulent individuals who obviously hacked these
sites and collected our personal details?
Why on earth should we have a
problem with the recent acquisition of the free messaging service; WhatsApp by Facebook Chief
Executive Officer – Mark Zuckerberg (who had already bought Instagram and also
had a failed bid to acquire Snapchat) when we definitely do not have a problem
with the fact that his
company, with a
single move,
acquired all our personal details in addition to the ones they already have on Facebook and Instagram?
Of course these issues do not concern us!
Regrettably, they do. The fact that we
usually do not care about these privacy concerns until something bad happens to
us personally or to someone related to us will not make them go away. No matter how hard you try to
dismiss these concerns as mere paranoia or just one of those fears of an
ordinary Nigerian, the truth still remains that our perfect anonymity is no
longer perfect, our lives and that of our children are no longer under our
control.
So I'm guessing you want to know how we can get out
of this maze right? My
response is; the choice is yours...
You just echoed my thoughts exactly... Imagine if them just post people messages and claim say na error... Omo many families go scatter o... 'cos those our Whatsapp messages bad gan lol
ReplyDeleteWait so Facebook don buy Instagram and Whatsapp? Ekaite!! Where have I been
ReplyDelete@Clara... Ekaite kwa... U better scream o 'cos na 14 years una go get. With all the young men avalable, nonsense ugly girl
ReplyDeleteGiven the role the social media played in inciting many of the recent uprisings of our time, it could be hard not to think of Facebook owners' quest not being backed by a "strong" organisation or even government to acquire as much of these networks as possible. Now that is one for the conspiracy theorists to figure out.
ReplyDeleteNo wonder!! Now I know why I have been getting strange calls from one Idiot wey de claim to be PHCN staff. I am sure he got my details from one of dem sites..I don die o
ReplyDeleteHahaha! Clara, you can still buy from Facebook it is not late oh Lol!
ReplyDeleteNikky, this article is food for thought. I am thinking of leaving everything and going back to the good old days when life was much easier. I do not need to spend money buying credit, no network, whether friends picked my calls or not, and whether MTN too my credit. This is so much work and life is too short oh!
ReplyDeleteIt is my first time here and I wish to Congratulate you Nikky, You have a beautiful blog, interesting stories, nice pic roll, and very colourful. I am now one of your fans :) Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteAlso my first time here and glad to see that it's not commercialised and gossip oriented even though u have to pay bills. On the issue at hand, the worst that can happen is blackmail but that only works on the rich. So my fellow below-middle-class people have nothing to worry about
ReplyDelete@Michael-Dennis: I never really thought of it that way. Or should I say, I found no reason to see it that way; there's nothing wrong in trying to oust opposition in an area of business that will forever keep growing. I think only idle conspiracy theorists (not referring to you in particular) will delve into this in the manner you have just outlined. many would rather appreciate the mastery of this young Entrepreneur.
ReplyDeleteThank you Banke, Ada and Odim. I appreciate your comments.
ReplyDeletewelcome aboard!!
Lovely write up Nikky.
