Sunday Reading - My Reflection

Daily Reading for Sunday January 14, 2018
Reading 1 taken from; First Samuel 3:3-10, 19
Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 40:2, 4, 7-8, 8-9, 10
Reading 2, First Corinthians 6:13-15, 17-20
Gospel, John 1:35-42

In the first reading, God located and called Samuel in the course of his work/vocation in the temple, (We know the story of Samuel's birth). When he answered the call and made himself a servant of the most High, God was with him and did not let any of his words fall to the ground. This goes to show that God will never forsake us whenever we answer His call or accept to be His servant in our chosen vocations.

The Gospel tells us that the moment John's disciples heard about Jesus Christ from their master, they left all they were doing and followed Him because they "have found the Messiah". Simon, whose brother was Andrew (we recall he was located by Christ in the course of his chosen vocation) left all he was doing and allowed his brother to lead him to the Messiah. He answered the call and followed Christ. His vocation was enlarged (from a fisherman to a fisher of men) and his name was changed to Peter which means rock. From that day onwards he, with other disciples, brought many souls to the faith.

All these men who answered God's call were seeking God. Upon encountering Him they eagerly left everything they were doing and followed. God never departed from them.

The 2nd reading sums it all up by reminding us that immorality is a barrier to and can block our ears from hearing God's call (the immoral man sins against his own body which is the temple of the Holy Spirit). It goes ahead to point out that the benefit of uniting to the Lord and shunning immorality is that; God will raise us up by His power. This simply means that; anyone who glorifies God in his or her body and answers when called in their chosen vocations will be raised the same way our Lord was raised. As a member of Christ body, everything will be added unto them (Matt 6:33).

How and Where does this Call come to us?

We are called everyday. It can be a call to Family life, Priesthood or any vocation of our choice. Like Samuel, we are encouraged to respond; "speak Lord for your servant is listening". As Christians who have been bought with a price, we have a duty to open ourselves to God's word so as to be united and be one spirit with Him. Such a fusion is the only sure way we can shun immorality or sin against our own bodies and the Holy Spirit.

The following questions are however pertinent; as Christians, are we doers of the Word? Are we too busy that we cannot answer this call? Is immorality stopping us from recognizing the voice calling us? Do we follow or do we resist the voice of our Messiah?

I pray my reflection touches you today. If you wish to publish your Sunday reflection on Nikkyivy's blog, kindly send it to - nikyjone@gmail.com before Saturday of every week. Only approved reflections will be published. Thank you.

May the Lord bless us, Amen.
