DARKNESS E. 5

The sound of a baby crying pierced into the darkness. Someone should hush that baby! Can someone please? I am trying to sleep. As if in response to her silent plea, the baby’s voice faded. Mercy sighed with relief and grunted when something soft and warm lingered on her forehead. Her eyes slowly fluttered open. She winced against the bright  light hanging above her head. Her vision blurred and she shut her eyes.

The lingering fragrance of mixed spices tickled her nostrils as her brain awakened. She carefully opened her eyes, blinking rapidly, she wondered where she was. A face suddenly appeared above her and Mercy jolted.

The face looked vaguely familiar. It smiled down at her and disappeared. Mercy turned her head in search of the face, but a sharp pain pierced through her head, threatening to split her skull in half. She gasped and reached up to touch her head when strong hands held her down. Her body tensed. A shiver ran down her spine and she started struggling to get away. She tried to scream out for help, but her lips felt like they had being glued together.

"I won't hurt you...Mercy please stop."

A deep voice muttered in her ear and she stopped to listen. Her vision blurred as a pleasant odor her brain decoded as alcohol  wafted into her nostrils. Something cool rubbed against her under arm, followed by a tingling electric sensation. Mercy let out a low cry and tried to pull her hand free as a different pain she could not describe traveled through her arm and rammed into her throbbing head. She closed her eyes and whimpered;

"Stop - please" She pleaded.

“Ssh... You are safe now. I’m here.” the deep voice whispered in her ear.

She took deep breaths and felt the pain receding the same way it had started. Her body slowly relaxed.

Go away. I just want to sleep... She yelled in her head. She felt herself slipping back into the familiar darkness. The peace pulled her in and she silently wished the baby would not come back.

“She will be fine. The injection will help her sleep.”

An abrasive voice echoed in her head, disturbing her peaceful world. Mercy struggled to push it away, to tuck herself far away from the intrusion.

“Are you sure she won’t remember... you know?”

The voices pierced through the shield she had erected around herself and her tired brain tried to process their conversation as she slowly faded.

“You don’t trust me anymore? Come on man...”

“I do. I'm just worried...”

Mercy tried to force her eyes open, but her eyelids felt like someone had sewn them together. She weakly willed herself to resist the strong urge to sleep as a strange warmth hastily swept down her body and wrapped around her numb bones. She drifted off.
