FIFA 2026 WORLD CUP VAR SILENCE
Okay, I know this Robo-Ref mic-up aims to fix the frustrating silence of VAR and that FIFA magnanimously decided to adopt this practice for the 2026 WorldCup.
Yeah yeah, we know the back story that it was stolen from NFL, Rugby and other sports and has been tried out by the English Premier League, Germany's Bundesliga, Australia's A-League and so on. Well, news flash, it is the new reality of the world cup this 2026.
Let me break it down:
In the good Old school Days, if a foul occurred, the Ref pointed, showed a card and walked away. The player just accepted his fate like “it iz what it iz” while we argued if the card was right or wrong. It was confusing for fans and even players.
In 2026, the Ref goes to the sideline VAR monitor to review a controversial play, makes a decision, flicks a switch on his hip to turn on the microphone which is connected directly to the stadium's public address (PA) system and the global TV broadcast (we watching from the comfort of our devices). Ref goes ahead to tell everyone the specific offense and decision;
Ref: “Number 10, that’s a yellow for simulation. You dove. There was no contact. The VAR showed your left foot initiated contact after the defender pulled out. Please accept this decision and continue playing.” LOL!
At this point, Old school would ask, “do these guys need an explanation so they don’t have a meltdown?” (nothing personal lol!!)
If you've not been following leagues, it would feel like FIFA by using this in the World Cup basically turned every card into a parent-teacher conference or therapy session.
As if the ref has to explain the “why” or Gen ... sorry, player, will tweet “the ref is corrupt” for 5 days straight followed by update by ref: “I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed” 😂
Oh well, let's look at the bright side. In this World Cup, we will not be left in the dark just staring at a giant screen that just says "VAR Review in Progress". It actually feels good to be carried along.
Well done FIFA for embracing the future.
